Liska’s Role in Jewish Spiritual Heritage
Liska, established as a hub of Jewish cultural and religious life in the 1800s, holds an important place in history. Thousands of pilgrims come annually to pay homage to Tzvi Hirsh Liska, also revered as Hershele Lisker. With 500+ Jewish heritage sites, including cemeteries and synagogues, Liska is a symbol of enduring heritage. By the late 19th century, the Jewish population of Liska reached nearly 3,000, enriching its cultural environment. Liska’s influence extends beyond its borders, reaching nearby towns like Kerestir and impacting Jewish life across Hungary. About 5,000 pilgrims and tourists visit Liska each year, drawn by its historical and spiritual atmosphere.
Preservation initiatives for Liska are driven by both local and global support.
